Part Exchange VS Selling Your Bike – Straight Talking Advice, Either Way.

Part Exchange VS Selling Your Bike

Straight Talking Advice, Either Way.

We welcome part exchange — but we’re honest, almost to a fault, so…

If you’re thinking about selling your bike as part of an upgrade, here’s the honest truth upfront: in many cases, you’ll get more money selling it yourself than trading it in. As a VAT-registered bike shop, we have to account for VAT, preparation, storage, and resale risk — you don’t.

If you’re serious about buying a fantastic new bike from us, we’re more than happy to advise you on how to sell it yourself. We are experts when it comes to online market places, we have sold over 60’000 bike related items, from gear cables to full bikes on ebay over the last decade. We know the realities of the market across Manchester and Stockport. That means clear, experienced advice — whether that ends in a private sale or a part exchange.

You’ll usually get more selling privately – and we’ll help you do that

Most customers coming to us have decent-quality bikes. In those cases, we generally recommend selling privately, particularly via eBay, which offers stronger buyer and seller protection than most alternatives.

If you’re upgrading to a new bike and want guidance, we’re happy to:

—Advise on realistic pricing
—Help with keywords and listing structure
—Reassure prospective buyers about condition, setup, and value
—Help you present the bike honestly and confidently
—Advise on the right level of work to tidy the bike for best return.

In short: selling privately often leaves you with more to spend on your next bike, and we’re completely comfortable saying that.

When part exchange does make sense

That said, part exchange is still a valid option – especially if you want a clean, quick solution without the hassle of messages, tyre-kickers, or strangers turning up at all hours with no real intention of buying.

When we value a bike for part exchange, we have to factor in:

—VAT
—Workshop time and preparation
—Storage, warranty, and resale risk

Because of that, the figure will usually be lower than a private sale — and we’ll explain exactly why. No inflated expectations, no games. If part exchange helps you move forward faster and with less stress, it can absolutely be the right call.

The next steps towards your new bike

If part exchange is part of your upgrade plan, the next step is to find the bike that’s right for you. Whether you’re moving into a new commuter, gravel bike, road bike, e-bike, or something more specialist, we’ll help you navigate Manchester’s best range of bikes and work out the route forward — part exchange or otherwise.

Have a look around our bikes on our new website here, give us a call or better still come in for a chat and a test ride.

Part Exchange FAQs – Manchester & Stockport

1: If I am selling myself, is it better to sell my bike through locally focused platforms (Facebook Market Place / Gumtree or casting the net wider? (Ebay)

That depends on the bike and your priorities. Selling locally in Manchester or Stockport can be quicker and simpler and don’t forget we are in the second city, not the middle of nowhere, but Ebay might reach a wider audience and achieve stronger prices for good-quality bikes. We’re happy to talk through which route makes sense for your specific bike.

2: Do you look at bikes that aren’t worth much on paper?

Yes. Even if a bike isn’t high-value, it can still be useful to understand your options. Sometimes it’s about convenience, sometimes it’s about clearing space, and sometimes it’s about moving one step closer to a new bike. We’ll always give you an honest view.

3: Does condition matter more than brand when valuing a bike?

In many cases, yes. A well-maintained, sensibly specced bike often performs better — whether sold privately or traded in — than a higher-end brand in poor condition. We look at the whole picture, not just the logo on the frame.

4: Can I talk to someone in person about selling or part exchange?

Absolutely. If you’re local to Manchester or Stockport, you’re welcome to call in to our Reddish shop, give us a ring, or email us. A quick conversation usually clears things up far faster than guessing online.
